“Open When” Envelope Ideas…

We’ve all seen the very sweet “Open When” letters idea, where you send your other half a series of letters to open in different situations (Open When You’re Sad, Open When You Miss Me, ect,.) but I haven’t been able to find out what people have put inside them! So here is what I put inside my Open When envelopes, plus a few more ideas πŸ˜‰

In the “Open When it’s your birthday” envelope I included a letter as well as a dollar store birthday boy pin and a few balloons that I had blown up, written sweet messages on and then deflated so that he’d have a balloon bouquet of sweet messages when he blew them up on his birthday πŸ™‚

In my “Open When You Miss Me” envelope I included a letter and some printed photos of the two of us πŸ™‚

This one’s a little sexy ;). In my “Open When You’re Horny” envelope (what?) I included a sexy non-PG letter along with a couple of R-rated photos that I printed off the internet and glued my face on the bodies, more for a laugh than anything :p. Funny enough I did such a good face pasting job that I almost got myself in trouble! My boy said he was about to call me up and demand to know who took these photos of me, but then he realized what it was and thought it was hilarious. Phew! haha

In my “Open When You’re Mad At Me” envelope (which has not yet been opened, woohoo :p), I included a letter as well as a handful of kisses (of the chocolate variety). Nothing like kisses and chocolate to mend a lovers spat ;).

In my “Open When You’re Stressed” envelope I included a letter along with a square of bubble wrap and instructions stapled on that say “For immediate stress relief: pop 3 capsules as needed. And remember that I ❀ you!”

In my “Open When You Need To Smile” envelope I included a homemade card with a very beautiful and heartfelt poem on it: “Roses are red, But sometimes they’re thorny, When you’re around me I get sorta… (open card) … corny. Shame on you! I know what you were thinking.” I also included a couple inside jokes on the inside of it.

And last but certainly not least, this envelope took a LONG time and alot of planning but it was so worth it cause he loved it :). For my “Open When You’re Bored” envelope I sent my man on a long distance scavenger hunt. For a while I worked clues into letters/presents/postcards I sent him and by following the clues in this envelope he was able to find a hidden key that would unlock the box inside this envelope. Plus, there were some good surprises along the way so he wouldn’t skip ahead! πŸ˜‰

Some More Ideas:

I think this would be really sweet to include in an “Open When You’re Having A Bad Day” / “When You Need Some Hope/Faith/Courage” envelope.

A cootie catcher would make a sweet addition to an “Open When You Need To Know How Much I Love You” envelope; include 8 sweet love notes (one under each flap).

Incase you’ve forgotten how to make one, never fear! Here are some easy-to-follow instructions:Β http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Cootie-Catcher-(Origami-Fortune-Teller)

AnotherΒ “Open When You Need To Know How Much I Love You”Β idea could be to make them a Youtube video or write up a nice blog post about them and include the link. This is a video I made of my boy and I using a free downloadable program called VideoPad Video Editor. Youtube Movie Maker is another good one that’s free.

Any chamomile or sleepytime teaΒ will work for this but you could go that step further and make these hand-sewn heart-shaped teabags, or these love letter teabags for an “Open When You Can’t Sleep” envelope. As an alternative you could include something like a relaxing playlist on cd or a pocket-sized book or printed story they’d like.

“Open When you’re having a guys night” – certificates or money for pizza and/or beer, and/or a burned copy of a guys movie.

“Open When you’re having a girls night”- facemasks and/or money/certificates for snacks/wine/movie theatre and/or a burned copy of a chick flick.

In an “Open When Things Are Falling Apart” envelope include this adorable love note/photo puzzle, so that your loved one can put the pieces back together.

In an “Open When You Need a Reminder” envelope you could include a thoughtful keychain that would remind them of you, or a swatch sprayed with your perfume.

In an “Open When You’re Feeling Grumpy” envelope, include their favourite candy. Favourite junk food always cheers people up!

The possibilities for this are endless!

Giftcards (iTunes, coffee shop, movie theatre, spa, gas card, ect,.) open up tons of possibilities just in themselves, but make sure your sweetie has the service near them and can use the giftcard where they are (if they’re in another country for example). iTunes and Starbucks are a couple giftcards that I know can be used overseas :).

“Open When You Need Some Romance” -iTunes giftcard with a written playlist, or a link to a youtube playlist you’ve made for them

“Open When You’re Homesick” or “Open When You Need Me” -gas card/train ticket/bus ticket (if they are away on base or at school they could drive home, or if they are driving distance from you and have a car they could come see you).

Anything small and meaningful make ideal little keepsakes to put in such an envelope. I will likely add to this list as I see things and I’d love to hear your ideas! Have you ever sent/received Open When letters? How did they go over?Β Leave some words! πŸ™‚

  1. thanks for the idea, i got really crafty and made my own envelops aswell. I reckon my gf will cry when she gets it on her birthday. Our LDR is especially hard because live in the worst possible time zone….Australia’s EST and shes from Spain, super long distance relationship

  2. The first thing I thought about was “won’t the candy spoil or melt?” Then i remembered not everyone lives in California where it’s summer all year long.

  3. you gave me some great ideas to do this for my friends! I’m going to give my friends this on Saturday! Thanks so much!

  4. Thank you so much πŸ™‚
My boyfriend is in the navy. I want to make these for when he gets deployed. He can’t text or call or anything when he’s in a submarine… He’ll probably leave in january for 12 weeks, but maybe sooner 😦 He’ll be gone on days like Valentine’s day, my birthday, our anniversary… so I hope this will remind him of us β™₯

    1. I can only imagine how difficult a deployment would be, but I’m sure that your surprise will make it a little easier for him πŸ™‚ Best wishes to you both! Glad I could help πŸ™‚

    1. print out a photo glue the wooden sticks onto the photo side by side. once the glue has dried gently cut it apart with a penknife

  5. I like this great idea too!

Long time I had a LDR as well. Good luck we live happily together now and we won’t miss this and each other anymore.
My boyfriend hadn’t any pictures on his wall and none of me (typical bachelor flat. “If you make a whole in your wall, you have to close it if you move away”… no comment). Therefore I decided to make nice photos of us and our activities on every weekend we could see us. After one year I’ve presented him a calender (8.5″ x 11″) with 12 sheets (1 per month). On every sheet there was a nice background photo (8.5″ x 11”) with 1-3 smaller other photos on it. F.e. background = beach and sea of island Gran Canaria, where we have been on holidays; smaller photos = us (eating something special from Gran Canaria), a typical sight, which we liked very much or what ever is worth to be remembered to.
Today I still make this calender. It’s much work because pictures and colors on it should fit together that your eye feel comfortable. In cold grey winter times there is less time to make nice pictures because we are more lazy in winter times in doing something special. πŸ™‚
I also like to put good friends and family on this calender as well. They are an important part in our life. And of course we do nice thing together which we should remember later on as well.
I have made many photos since I have my digital camera. But I don’t open them often and remember the past… they are too many. But these “good-to-remember-these-dates-calenders” of the past = nice memories = photo album I take more often into my hand or show it to friends who visit us – it’s more funny when they are also can be find on one or another month-page. And they don’t need much space.

Regards from Germany – sorry for some wrong English words. I suppose you’ve understood what I wanted to explain. πŸ™‚

  8. I am actually going to use this idea for my oldest child this spring as she heads off to college. It’s hard saying god-bye to my oldest, the the only daughter, so this might help her not miss us so much, and help me be able to send her off with a bunch of care from our family. I am just thinking…Open when you actually start to miss your brothers…Open when you miss the dog…Open when you want pizza, but have no money…Open during your first finals week…
    Thanks for these great ideas!

    1. That’s awesome πŸ™‚ I think one of the best parts of being in a relationship is getting to do thoughtful little things for the one you love and seeing them smile. Best wishes to you and your man I’m sure he will love your open when letters x

      1. He did love them! I sent them last year! He hasn’t finished openening them, but he was one happy man!

  12. Thank you so much! I stumbled across this on Pinterest while looking for ways to tell my boyfriend how much he means to me, because I graduate in May and leave for Basic Military Training in June, and I’ve been searching for ways to help him get through the Summer, and this fit perfectly! 15. Thank you so much😭 I’m leaving in about a month & there’s no way I can communicate with him. But thank you so much for the idea. I’m going to do this.😭 THANK YOU!!!

  16. Great inspiration – I did something like this a while back for a friend who was having a hard time. Now I think I’d like to do a bunch for happy times. Cheers πŸ™‚

  17. I am planning on doing this for a girl I only see about twice a year. I wanted to get something special for her. And since I am a clueless IT guy I thought I might google it to see what I could find. Lo and behold I found this. πŸ™‚ I think she will really enjoy it. Thank you for the ideas.

  18. I am trying to do this for my daughter starting college. So far I have open me when you have your first all nighter, I wrote a note about how she always aces it but loves to wait till the last second to study or finish a paper and put a 10$ Starbucks gc inside πŸ˜‰

  19. Love the effort you put in! Not only to your ‘Open When’s, but to compiling them on your blog to share with us! I’m spending my day making envelopes, writing notes, printing pics for my own. Thanks for sharing!
I’m making them for my ‘not-yet-boyfriend’. Sounds strange, I know. He’s at Bible College and not meant to date until he finishes his first year…which is 4 weeks away. Problem is, the day he finishes he flies back to his home country for 2 months! Not ideal for starting a new relationship, though in a way it’s only a matter of labels/titles that change once he finishes his first year of college! We spend a lot of time together as an unofficial couple and we talk as if we already are (plus, we’re late 20’s, so it’s not like we’re just young teens falling in love…we’ve both learnt a few lessons in the past). Not sure why I’m sharing all this! Maybe cause I can’t say much to other people at the moment with us not allowed to properly date!! Sigh. I know it’s only 2 months but I can’t wait to be a proper couple….in the same country!

    1. You’re welcome! I wish I had time still to update the blog more but I’m in a ridiculously intensive university course at the moment. Best of luck to you and your man πŸ™‚ x

  20. It was very helpful. Thanks a lot. Can u give me some more ideas for open with letters, for a best friend’s bday.. It’s a bit urgent please

  21. i’ve wanted to do this 4ever, but never knew what to put in it, thx so much! now my bf and my brother is going to get some (it’ll take a while to get my bro his cuz hes in texas for air force)
