Expat Life Lately: Autumn & Rustic Decorating

Even with the unseasonably warm days, the cooler nights and raining leaves have brought with them the promise of autumn. That cozy transition between summer sun and snowflakes -made for leather boots, scarves, hot drinks and cuddles- is my favourite time of year.

While the colours might not be quite as bright as a proper Canadian fall I’m definitely seeing some pops of autumn around me especially last week when we visited the Hampton Court gardens for a screening of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

The cool evening was a perfect excuse to snuggle under the stars – as if I need an excuse to squeeze up next to this handsome fellow 😉

We also took a jolly little jaunt to Canterbury; a city neither of us have ever visited before. Besides the beautiful (though scaffolded) cathedral, cobbled streets and tea shops I was excited to find so many candy stores with Halloween looming.

I was doubly excited to find a pumpkin spice cookie at a market in Canterbury which was the pie on top of our thanksgiving weekend.

We’ve also been in a new rented house for just over 2 very busy months. While there is still a long to-do list we have accomplished a good amount in a relatively short time and the place is beginning to look somewhat like a home.

We’ve taken our bookcase out of storage which I’ve filled with our trinkets and board games. I love my two autumn pumpkins I brought over in my suitcase from Home Sense in Canada which make a seasonal appearance.

As we had too many dvd’s to fit in our tv unit I ordered this quatrefoil box to disguise them and it matches beautifully with our pillow from Next.

Since our coffee table was taking up the whole of our very tiny living room we picked up a much smaller second-hand coffee table and because it didn’t have drawers I found this adorable hessian bag to put all our odds & ends in.

I also needed some apple crates for decoration for our wedding next year as well as for the Halloween Harry Potter display I’m planning. Rather than stuff them in our already-over-stuffed shed I used 2 of them to make a shoe rack and the other four I stacked for a shelf in our spare bedroom.

While our downstairs is rustic our upstairs is decidedly nautical. I am a huge fan of the seaside so I could hardly pass up this lovely little sailboat for £5 at a gift shop. The fact it lights up just makes it that much more enchanting. They are also available for the same price at the Range.

Have you spotted any signs of autumn? What is your favourite season and why?

Cheerio eh!

Expat Life Lately: The Seaside and Painting

hunstanton

Two weekends ago we spent a cloudy, though lovely Saturday at the seaside in Hunstanton. We walked over the coarse, seaweed-strewn sand, and upturned gull-grey rocks looking for crabs. We found one!

He was awfully skiddish and hard to catch. Especially if you’re a bit nervous like I was. But we became fast friends. And by fast friends I mean he kept trying to pinch me and I narrowly resisted the urge to drop him.

A trip to the seaside wouldn’t be complete without visiting the candy shop on the pier for some sweet treats. I bought a bag of sour keys and it took me right back to being a young teen, spending every last cent of my lunch money on sweets and sneaking them in class all afternoon. They weren’t stale like they so often are; they were soft and moreish. Can’t wait to go back and buy more.

My man bought a cup of cockles to snack on; how he eats those things I have no idea, but they’re a big hit at the seaside in England.

As we traipsed along the shoreline, delighting in the salt air I couldn’t help but think that I have such a good life. And to reflect on how thankful I am.

My man also found the teeniest, tiniest crab ever. Don’t know how he ever spotted this little guy!

Sunday held rain in store so we decided to finally get out the paint we bought months ago and paint our bedroom. We painted it in a grey Valspar paint called Hinkypunk. I adore the colour, and my man for letting me nautical-ize most of the house. The fact that the name is Harry Potter related was a happy coincidence :).

In between coats the sun came out and we had a splendid lay in the backyard hammock which rocked us both off to sleep.

I’m happy we’ve been able to bring a bit of the seaside to our bedroom as it’s one of my most favourite places in the world. I also found the most adorable photo frame today and had to get it for our room.

What’s your favourite thing to eat at the seaside?

Expat Life Lately: Home Decor and New Recipes

The past couple of weekends have been quiet as I’m still feeling under the weather. Friday night my sweetheart picked me up from work as usual only this time I showed him around the school and he helped us change our displays for next term. We built a big airplane together out of cardboard for the kids to sit in. It was really nice having him there to help out :).

We spent Saturday doing a bit of shopping in Cambridge and brought home these lovely couch cushions. I am in love with the duck wearing Wellingtons pillow as it looks so quintessentially British. Like the embodiment of a Beatrix Potter story.

I also thought this ornate beaded pillow was really beautiful. Although if you fall asleep on it you get the beaded pattern pressed into your cheek.

This weekend I also tried my hand at baking scones for the first time. I realized after adding all the ingredients that the person who gave me the recipe (who makes the best scones ever) must have forgotten an ingredient or two in the directions as there were no liquids to make the floury mixture into a dough. I improvised and added in some milk but they aren’t nearly as good as I was hoping. I shall try them again soon.

I did have some culinary success this weekend however. My man and I decided to cook a big roast dinner on holiday Monday and I thought I would try and make Spaetzle. It’s a German dumpling/noodle that a good German friend of mine used to cook when I was little and I loved them. And it turned out fab; just as I remember. It goes wonderfully topped with gravy alongside a nice roast.

My other half insisted on having some Kraft stuffing with it (I’m now down to one lonely box!). I’ll have to see if some of my lovely friends and family back home will send me some more from Canada.

We picked up some strawberry plants and some flowers for our hanging basket but the weather has been dreadfully gloomy so haven’t been out in the garden this weekend. I hope we will get a few sunkissed, lemonade-filled summery days soon so I can get back out there in the dirt!

I did however pick these lovely buttercups from the lawn before my sweetheart started mowing last weekend. I’ve always loved buttercups.

What’s been your biggest cuisine-related success as of late? Or food disaster?

Cheers!
